Hello? Are you there? Oh great, we thought you were missing for a second! You’ve arrived at the area for all things Non-GMO!

But what does GMO stand for?

GMO = Genetically Modified Organism

A genetically modified organism is an animal, plant, microorganism/other organism that is modified through its genetics. This is done through a laboratory that uses transgenic technology or genetic engineering.

By modifying the genetics of these organisms, it creates virus/bacterial genes that are not obtained organically through a crossbreeding process or in nature.

So why are GMOs used?

Most of the GMOs that are used are to prevent certain conditions from happening to crops that are grown. For example, preventing apples from changing colours and turning brown.

There are 3 common attributes that are found in GMO crops:

  • Protection against insects that cause damage to crops
  • Resistance to specific herbicides that are used to control weeds
  • Protection against specific viruses that may affect plants

When farmers use GMO crops, it prevents them from having to use as much pesticides. This helps them save money and avoid having excess amounts of pesticides on crops.

Then what food is GMO?

Some common foods that have versions that are genetically modified include: soy, canola, corn, cotton, potato, zucchini, papaya, sugar beet, and alfalfa.

Many of these crops will then be refined and then transformed into ingredients like: corn syrup/starch, sugar, soy, canola oil, molasses, etc.

What is Non-GMO?

Non-GMO means that the product was developed/created without the use of genetic engineering, and that their ingredients don’t come from GMOs.

How do I know if a product is Non-GMO?

To identify if a product is Non-GMO, the packaging of the product will have a label that says “Non-GMO Project Verified”.

Are there Non-GMO benefits?

There are some benefits associated with choosing Non-GMO foods:

  • Dismissal of foods that contain growth hormones & antibiotics
  • You’ll have foods that have a better impact on the environment
  • Access to fresher foods
  • Relief from foods that have toxic chemicals in them
