Taza works directly with cacao producers through a transparent Direct Trade model that supports fair wages, ethical farming, and lasting partnerships.

Taza Chocolate was born from a love of bold flavour and honest sourcing.

After a trip to Oaxaca, Mexico, founder Alex Whitmore fell in love with the traditional method of stone grinding cacao and set out to bring that experience back home. Real chocolate with traditional techniques just tasted different, and we needed more. In 2005, Taza opened its doors in Somerville, Massachusetts, and began producing chocolate that stays true to its roots; unrefined, minimally processed, and full of rich dark chocolate character.

Unlike mass produced dark chocolate, Taza is made using hand-carved granite millstones that preserve the intensity and natural texture of the cacao. Rich chocolate flavour with authentic old school chocolate texture, with minimal processing and ingredients.

Taza is also a world leader in ethical cacao sourcing. They developed the first third-party certified Direct Trade cacao program in the U.S, and they continue to work directly with farmers in Latin America and the Caribbean to ensure better-than-Fair-Trade pricing, transparency in cacao sourcing, and long-term sustainability & regenerative farming in the cacao industry.

Taza proves that real chocolate doesn’t have to be over-processed or sugar-laden to be satisfying. There’s a reason traditional techniques are so trusted, and sometimes, returning to your roots is what our food needs most. With a rustic grind, bold taste, and deep respect for tradition, they bring something new (and a little bit ancient) to the organic snack table.
