Let’s invite in that spring air with a refreshing practice known to many; cleaning! There’s something sacred when it comes to cleaning, the whole “out with the old, in with the new” adage can attest to something as timeless as spring cleaning especially. We’re inviting in not only a new and warmer season that allows the flowers to bloom and the leaves to unfurl, it’s the first sign of vivid color underneath the blanket of snow, the greens of grass poking out, making way through the cold remains of snow to take in the spring sun! Like the flowers and the animals, we also wake up from a bit of a slumber, sure, we’re awake in the winter, but there’s a lot about winter that can clog up mentalities and homes, the clutter of winter wear like boots and jackets, the stained floorboards of boot tracks, the salt from the driveway, it’s no question that winter can really wear us down. When it comes to spring though, the sun’s out longer, which means more vitamin D and more energy, which in turn allows for us to cleanse our homes and bodies of the winter grogginess!

Don’t know where to begin with your spring cleaning though? Not to worry because we’ve got some tips and tricks to help you out!

Make a plan

When we think of spring cleaning, a lot of us think of this big upheaval that takes place, flipping your house upside down to get rid of all that collected dust and cobwebs in the untouched corners, and while some of us like the challenge that spring cleaning provides, others can find it a bit daunting, especially for single resident homes. We’ve heard a lot of people say to start with what you can see, but if you see a lot, where do you start? With a plan! Whether it’s with some sticky notes, or on a vision board, whatever you need to do to get a plan in place before you even touch a cleaning tool, it makes things a lot easier when you don’t have bubbles of tasks floating around in your head only for them to pop when something else more urgent comes first, like just living your life. So let’s break down spring cleaning into sections, and go room by room. What’s the most important task for the bathroom? Scrubbing the tub? That becomes your first task for your bathroom, and so on and so forth. Once you have a layout of your residence and the tasks that come with each room in your abode, you’ll find that spring cleaning becomes less daunting and easier to take on! And if you’re anything like us, you’ll find that crossing things off in each room that much more fulfilling. Don’t feel bad if you didn’t clean the whole bathroom and underneath the sink in one day, at least you still managed to scrub the tub and sink! We’re normalizing small achievements to meet the big end goal when it comes to this spring cleaning season!

Declutter & Organize

We’re in the era of decluttering energies that don’t agree with ours, and the same can be said about our homes during the winter months! We want to declutter the residual winter energy and that means decluttering our homes. But how do we declutter while still maintaining that spring peace? This is where organization is key! Instead of just throwing all that winter wear in the storage closet (especially when you already got some unworn, unused, and holiday-related items in it), take a look at what you have and do the whole ‘this brings me joy, this does not bring me joy’ thing so that you can not only keep a hold of the things that matter, but it also makes it a lot easier to find when it comes time to need them! Out with the old and expired, so say goodbye to the expired kitchen supplies, the forgotten books, the old clothes from high school, the random paperwork and receipts that you don’t really need for anything other than memories sake, or, if you do want to keep paperwork, you can also scrapbook it together so that way, instead of them taking up space in a random box of stuff, there’s a whole book dedicated just to those memories. This frees up space for you to move things around and organize what you keep by how soon you need it!

Have the right tools in the right place

Let’s break out those cleaning gloves and focus on how to cater cleaning to be both efficient and time-saving. When it comes to time-saving, we cannot stress it enough; the organization is key! Keeping these tools in the space that you’ve deemed as the storage location for your cleaning supplies (ours is under the kitchen sink) with all your cleaning tools for that area like 18-in-1 liquid soap, cleaning wipes, and microfiber towels inside the mop bucket save space and also keeps all the tools together to mop the kitchen floor, wipe off your counters and stove tops, and clean the kitchen windows! If you don’t have a built-in space to keep your tools, there’s nothing wrong with repurposing an area to it, and it doesn’t have to be in view either if you wish to keep your tools discreet! Keep your replacement duster underneath the coffee table drawers for an easy way to swipe the table tops of any dust, you can also keep your cleaning wipes there in case you have any fingerprints or coffee cup stains you want to wipe down. Keeping replenishments of your cleaning tools with your cleaning tools saves you time running to other sections of the house, or worse off, forgetting where you put your replacements only to find it after you no longer need it.

Think Green

A big concept nowadays is thinking green, especially when there are a dozen cleaning supplies out there nowadays that have corrosive and other harmful chemicals, not only to you but also to the environment. A lot of cleaning companies now are changing with the times, and there are other cleaning companies that start off as a green cleaning companies for the betterment of us and our environments, and we couldn’t be more thankful that companies are recognizing the importance of non-toxic and non-harmful ingredients that also help the environment because we all live here on this silly little floating rock! A few tips to help in cleaning green is to find natural cleaning solutions or purchase products that repurpose plastic or that are biodegradable to reduce waste! If there are no intolerances in your home, a simple baking soda and lemon homemade mix wickes away stains, dirt and grime when scrubbing surfaces! You can also add a scant few drops of organic essential oils to your homemade cleaning concoctions to not only add in pleasant scents to your home, but they may also have anti-fungal and insect-repellent properties! Cleaning even the smallest ways, even if it’s just repurposing plastic bottles into planets, can really help in reducing waste this spring season!

There are a ton of other ways to make your spring cleaning dreams come true, but one of the most important things to remember is not to get discouraged when you didn’t complete a task you thought you would. It’s so easy to feel defeated when you’re not hitting your cleaning goals, but this just means that you can try other things. We know the types that stress clean, the same way that we know of those that procrastinate clean, there are so many different cleaning styles, you just have to find what works the best for you and remember that small achievements go a long way!
